Ringling Museum
In November of 2008 Shelley’s class was ending with a field trip to the Ringling Museum in Sarasota, Florida. Yep its the same people who bring the unicorn, dancing goats and the unemptiable clown car to a city near you. The Ringling Museum is designated the Florida State museum and have a huge collection. While the class went through and discussed the history of various pieces and analyzed its historical significance I found my mind drifting on the edge of boredom until my subconscious pointed out the prominence of penises in much of the garden statuary. I found that either the posing of the piece or its positioning relative to eye level of the view directed attention to the penis. Was this a result of curator, artist, or my state of mind. Dunno.
It was a fun museum and I’d like to go back. In the Egyptian exhibit my brain conjoined some smaller sculptures to produce HippoHawk. More on that in another post.
