Desired Degrees of Separation
I’m fairly open on my social networks and will generally welcome any friend request. However there are a few people from whom I’d like maintain a nice buffer.
Using Facebook as an example: I think I have run into my buffer by confirming a friend that is a fairly close coworker (and a jolly lovable outgoing sort of chap) to one of these “Buffer-needed” people. It’s not as if they couldn’t simply google me… but still.
How close have you come? Do you have desired degrees of separation? How is it working for you?

Seems that the buffer is stronger/wider than anticipated. Thanks New Friend!!!

I’m amazed by some of things that people post on facebook (i.e. “OMG I’m so horny!”, “Got so wrecked last night and had to drive home”). I wouldn’t post anything on a social network that I wouldn’t mind being tacked onto the bulletin board in my office.
One time I had to backtrack and remove a comment from FB about a “sales rep giving our department a facial” after my boss friended me. I’m sure he wouldn’t be a bad sport, but you just can’t trust people when paychecks are involved.
There are lots of stories like “How to tweet your way out of a job” that remind me to play my cards close to my chest:

You always have a good point of view….
I agree with you as there is a high degree of potentially embarrassing material posted for all to see.. Perhaps it is only people starring in their own Reality TV show..
I agree with your sentiment though.. I don’t post anything on the Internet that is not for public consumption. I figure that regardless how “private” I make a post, not that it resides in the information highway it is subject to exposure, catalogue, more exposure etc etc…
