Over the US Thanksgiving Day weekend I finally had the opportunity to catch up on Lost. I’ve made it through seasons 4 & 5 and am now working on season 1, with 2-3 to follow.

Present Theories:
Jacob is the father trying to raise his child. A loose parallel of Christian and Jack.
The Island is a prison: Jacob and “friend” are in the prison. Jacob is a warden whos “powers” can escape the island.

I’ve come up with a list of questions for which I’d like to find answers:

How is Jin hopping thorough time in Season 4 with the other Island persons but not helicopter crew, which should have been physically closer to the Island?

What did Daniel do/see while he was time shifted (like Desmond) What about his GF?

How did Claire get pregnant? Is it Jacobs baby?

What’s up with the polar bears?

What is special about Claire’s baby?

Is the statue the Egyptian God Sobek?

When did Richard get to the island?

How did the Other’s get to the island?

Who is funding the Others?

Is the dog (Vincent) real or vision? – I’m leaning to a vision, cause the dog died in the crash.

The Island is a fake. or possibly constructed (by Jacob?) e.g. not an island like Hawaii is an island

What lies in the shadow if the statue?

Who is Jacob? and his friend?

How did Desmond call Penny on Dec 24 at her home, only to have her pick him up a few days later in the middle of the ocean…. but it would depend on how long they were in the life raft.

Whose side is Daniel on?

Why were no baby’s able to be born on the Island from the time Alex was born until Claire’s baby was born?

What is the significance of the rain?

Where/When is Charlotte?

Some observations about the show:

Show takes place in relatively real time.

Two sides – there always seems to be two sides from Jacob and entity, Kate & Juliet, Sawyer & Jack, Dharma Initiative & Others, Ben & John, Ben & Charlie, temple & Statue

Island on top itself as it hops through time (During season 4 as the Island time shifts it loops back upon itself)

All “visions” are from Jacob’s “friend”, Jacob prefers to make direct contact with people.

Interesting that John can only walk on the Island since the fall when he met Jacob.

Claire’s not remembering the time she was with Ethan is a result of being taken to the temple in the same way that Ben was taken as a child.

Theories

Claire’s child is Jacob

The Monster, John (after his death), Vincent (the dog) are all manifestations of Jacob’s friend and are never seen on the screen at the same time.

The group in the helicopter was not taken along with the island because they had to safely deliver Claire’s baby to Claire’s mom (the only other safe person other than Claire)

Whispers have some relevance to the rain and the others. – present theory is that the Others can walk between planes of existence, different dimensions if you will. The rain is a physical manifestation of the cross over. Also explains why they cannot be tracked.

BTW I think this is a great show and ranks high on my list of Sci-Fi series to watch….

I’ve finished the remade Battlestar Galactica and it is to Sci-Fi what Sarah Palin is to a competent political career.

Though mildly entertaining it was more of a Thornbirds in space or Dynasty with rocketships than it was anything close to Science Fiction. The story was internally inconsistent and the writers had only one formula for conflict resolution – direct face to face conflict usually incorporating some manner of physical exertion.

Plot development was arbitrary and the BSG universe made no inherent sense. e.g. a society that had developed faster than light travel was unable to develop weapons more devastating than bullets and nuke-u-lar bombs? Then again Colonial society was in the process of dumbing down with each generation. The residents of Kobol were able to make Cylons, and even make them in a human form, this technology was then lost to (and forgotten by) future generations. The show ends with all the colonials giving up all the technology they had and integrating with the indigenous population on Earth. Bah. Not one person resisted? When the entire show was built upon someone taking great offense to every decision that was made? Stoopid stoopid ending to a stoopid stoopid show. At least Battlestar Galactica remained consistent in that regard. The first episode sucked. The last episode sucked. The episodes in between were able to bridge the sucky ends by being iterations of suck. Ahh.

If you liked the show great! If you think the show is good Science Fiction then you surely also believe that Sarah Palin resignation from being Alaska’s Governor is due to her amazing plan to make herself president in the next election. Good Luck with that.

My first brush with the series came at a 2005 Halloween party in San Francisco. The woman I was dating at the time noticed someone dressed in blue pants, deck shoe, and dark blue jacket with white piping and cried out “The Prisoner”. I thought to myself… doesn’t look like a prisoner.. she must have been talking about someone else.

It ended up that several friends and I decided to build a Burning Man theme camp around the concepts in The Prisoner. We had the Green Dome, Stone Boat, Kosho, Art Show, Elections, more Kosho, Lovely signs, random sayings, and of course Rover!!!! (that was my favorite part)

I started re-watching the series this year, in part due to the passing of The Prisoner actor, Patrick McGoohan. I felt it was definitely inline with the other Sci-Fi series that I have been watching as of late.

Continuing in my exploration of “classic” Sci-Fi series I’ve been watching Sliders. For those that you that are not familiar with the show it follows the adventures of four individuals that have a discovered a way to move or Slide between alternate universes. Most of the episodes focus on the main characters exploring various versions or possible versions of San Francisco.

Some of the perspectives are a little dated… like even after two years they still seem to hang on to their perspective of how things on “earth” work and then have to overcome the trouble it caused.

———-

I’ve quit watching the series in Season 3. The loss of John Reese Davies and the addition of Kari Wuhrer were not good things for the show. The dialogue and stories declined or at least did not improve. I was also not found of the addition of the Cro-Mag story line. If I run out of other series I may return to finish Season 4 & 5, maybe.

——————————————
——————————————

I’ve finished Season 1. The start was a little slow and dialogue somewhat rough. Season 2 is off to a better start. More involved and in episode 7 I caught several quotes or references to The Prisoner. I wonder if there are any other easter eggs to be found later in the series.

——————————————
——————————————

It’s Earthday and I’m deep into season 3. I find it interesting at the plot twists especially in some manner foreshadowing the changes in the US government after September 2001.

The acting is getting better more along the line of a Sci-Fi soap opera, but tackling much different subject matter. Lots of faces are showing up in the series that went on to larger roles in other series, Stargate SG1 captured many. The personal complications seemingly have taken a back seat to much grander themes of political intrigue and the fight for survival. The story now compares to that of Dune.

I’ve not seen Walter Koenig in much outside of the Star Trek franchise and am really enjoying his portrayal of the lead PsyCop.

——————————————
4-24-09
——————————————

The themes in Season 4 are strikingly similar to the last two seasons of Stargate SG-1 the Ori story arc.
And as Babylon 5 was written before SG-1 that explains that. Curious as to what happens in the next 30 some episode

——————————————
4-27-09
——————————————
I began season 5 this morning. Season 4 was dark and intense. Strong elements of psychological testing and challenges similar to that in The Prisoner.

On with the show!

Tonight’s launch of the space shuttle Discovery was beautiful. This is the third launch that I have seen from about 150 miles away. It takes nearly 30 seconds from the time of main engines light to when it comes up over the horizon.

There was a group of about 100 people that watched the launch from atop the St. Petersburg Pier. The view would have been just as good from the water, but it felt better to be up higher.

I’m hopeful to catch one of the launches up close before the Shuttle Program is concluded in 2010 with five (and up to eight)flights remaining. If anyone is interested lets get together for a launch party! There is a sweet spot around May 12-15 of this year with two launch scheduled in that time frame.

For whatever reason I didn’t watch Farscape during its original run. And since that time I have seen season 1 seveal times and a few episodes of season 2.

This past week I have successfully crossed the line into season 3 and am really enjoying the show. With only about 35 episodes and the ending mini series to go I am fully hooked. Farscape makes me wonder how Firefly would have developed had it gone on past its first season.

I’ve wrapped up Stargate SG-1 and Firefly. Farscape will soon be over. Trying to figure out what to watch next. I’ve watched the first bit of the Battlestar Galactica remake and was not impressed. Thee overall concept of the story did not interest me as I found it old overworked and retold poorly. I’ve seen Red Dwarf and enjoyed it.

back to season 3 – gotta find out what happens to John, Scorpius, and friends.
