Blind man navigates obstacle course with subconscious sight

I found myself listening to NPR radio this morning and to the story of a man who having suffered a stroke that damaged his occipital cortex. Testing has confirmed that he has no conscious site.  Yet..  researchers found that he is able to navigate around obstacles, perhaps using subconscious portions of his brain.

The video is stunning, not in quality, but that well the man does not run into anything.

I wonder what other functions of the brain have a more layered approach, where higher functions can be lost without a total loss of function.  ESP/6th sense anyone?
