Appalachian Trail
In April of 2008 Calamity and I departed San Francisco for points east. Part of our adventures during that trip was a trek along the Appalachian Trail through Virginia. Shenandoah National Park was amazing to hike through that time of year.
We got a ride to the trail from my cousins that own a farm in Culpepper, Virginia. The first day of the hike was foggy, which ended up being a good thing as we were not psyched out with looking up at what would be a 5 hour climb to the top of the ridge.
Along the way we saw many types of wildlife, snakes, squirrels, birds of every kind, deer, and almost a black bear and cub. The trail was traveled but not crowded, though it was easy to tell when it approached a town or favored camping area.
After 125 miles and several weeks of hiking we left the trail after discovering we had begun looking forward to setting up camp each night and no longer cared about the hike itself. We have plans to return to finish the trail in sections over the coming summers!
